Chevron Midstream Pipelines LLC (CPL) over the weekend shut in a Gulf of Mexico (GOM) offshore natural gas gathering pipeline that delivers production to the Henry Hub following an accident that left one contract worker dead and two injured on Saturday.

The worker was performing routine maintenance about six miles south of Timbalier Bay off the southeast coast of Louisiana when a valve failure occurred at about 11 a.m. CDT Saturday. The shut-in of the pipeline affected a minimal amount of production, according to Chevron. The line was being depressurized.

“Most of the production associated with the shut-in line has been rerouted to an alternative gas system,” Chevron said in an email. “The pipeline platform is part of the Henry natural gas gathering system which runs from offshore Louisiana to onshore. As a result of this incident, a small amount of natural gas condensate was released to water, but dissipated. As a precaution, containment boom has been deployed at the site. CPL is monitoring the situation through an on-site response team, and operating regular flights over the area.”

An investigation of the accident site by the Louisiana State Police and the U.S. Coast Guard was planned for Monday. The two injured workers have been released from the hospital.
