A former Baker Hughes Inc. executive is heading up the launch of a North American oilfield services provider that was created by merging four U.S. and Canadian operators.

Nine Energy Service, to be based in Houston, was created by bringing together the services of Northern States Completions (NSC), Tripoint LLC, CDK Perforating (CDK) and Integrated Production Services Canada (IPS). The new company is to provide conventional and unconventional completions and wireline services.

The “Nine” moniker reflects the company’s commitment to planning and execution at the wellsite, said CEO Paul Butero.

“The name ‘Nine’ represents our team’s aspirations. We recognize that perfection in the oilfield is impossible to achieve, and that a nine out of 10 reflects superiority in the industry. Our name is a reminder of our commitment to provide the best.”

Butero formerly was at Baker Hughes Inc., where he spent 31 years in operational and management roles. Before joining Nine, he was president of Baker Hughes US Land, the company’s largest region.

CFO Ann Fox, who also is vice president of strategic development, is a former U.S. Marine stationed in Iraq. After several tours of duty, she completed her masters degree at Harvard Business School and worked as an investment banking analyst. Most recently, Fox has been based in Houston, where she was evaluating oilfield sector opportunities. Executive sales will be the purview of Rocky Seale, who began his career with Baker Service Tools and previously worked for Smith International. Senior Vice President James Clair Holley, an engineer by trade, also is a 25-year Baker alum. Holley will be heading Canada operations, where he had been based for Baker since 2005.

Also joining the company are VP Christopher Payson, U.S. wireline; VP Rickey Green, Rocky Mountain region; VP Tricia G. Young, human resources; VP Tim Heffernan, health, safety and environment; James Athans, regional operations manager South Texas, MidCon and Northeast; and Stacy Turner, regional operations director, completions, Gulf of Mexico and Alaska. NSC and Tripoint contributed operations in Alaska, North Dakota, Texas, West Virginia, Oklahoma and Louisiana. CDK began as a perforating services provider in the Barnett Shale and now also offers offer wireline services in Oklahoma, West Virginia, eastern Ohio, North Dakota, southern New York and Pennsylvania. IPS has operations across Canada.

The new company already has made two acquisitions, Peak Pressure Control, a pressure pumper founded in 2010; and Dak-Tana Wireline. Peak is based in Midland, TX, while Dak-Tana, founded in 2007, operates in North Dakota. The acquisitions bolster a geographic footprint that encompasses 20 locations across North America, management said.
