Capstone Turbine Corp., of Woodland Hills, CA, has announced atwo-year, 126-unit order for its microturbine power systems fromMariah Energy, a leading Canadian energy service provider based inCalgary.

As an original equipment manufacturer, Mariah Energy will resellor deploy the Capstone MicroTurbine as a component of their HeatPlusPower micro-cogeneration packages worldwide. Mariah Energybegan working with the Capstone MicroTurbine system last year in acombined-heat-and-power (CHP) project at a commercial/residentialbuilding in Calgary. The system’s unique approach to converting theclean exhaust of the Capstone MicroTurbine maximizes the system’stotal efficiency to more than 80%, the companies claim.

“Almost all centralized power plant generation for the provinceof Alberta is coal-fired. Efficiency is about 30%, and a portion ofthat is lost in getting it to the end-user. Heat generated issimply wasted, and a lot of pollutants are being generated in theprocess,” said Paul Liddy, president of Mariah Energy.

“Our Capstone MicroTurbine-based solution offers triple theefficiency, near-zero emissions, heat and power costs lower thanutility rates, and protection from outages. And with the ability tosell unused electricity back to the grid, often at a margin ofseveral hundred percent, we can add further to a customer valueproposition,” Liddy said.

The 126 systems will combine Mariah’s exclusive heat exchangers, load management equipment and electronic controls with the Capstonemicroturbine. The “distributed micro-utility,” with all equipmentoperated from a web-based central dispatch and control facility, will be installed at no capital cost to the customer. Mariah takesresponsibility for all operational and maintenance aspects, billingthe end-user solely for energy delivered.
