Kinder Morgan Energy Partners LP reported that the 133-mile Kinder Morgan Louisiana Pipeline project went into service on Sunday, two days after receiving the green light from FERC (see Daily GPI, June 22).

“We are delighted that the Kinder Morgan Louisiana Pipeline is now in service,” said Steve Kean, president of Kinder Morgan’s Natural Gas Pipelines group. “This is the first of three large natural gas pipeline projects that we expect to complete this year.” He said the the final leg of Midcontinent Express Pipeline is targeted for service by Aug. 1, and the final leg of the Rockies Express Pipeline is scheduled to be in service by Nov. 1.

The 42-inch diameter Kinder Morgan Louisiana Pipeline will transport natural gas to multiple pipelines from the Cheniere LNG 2.6 Bcf Sabine Pass liquefied natural gas terminal located in Cameron Parish, LA.

The facilities in service include 132.2 miles of 42-inch diameter pipeline and associated facilities in Cameron, Calcasieu, Jefferson Davis and Acadia parishes; and a 2.3-mile, 24-inch diameter lateral connection with Florida Gas Transmission’s compressor station in Acadia Parish. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) certificated the Kinder Morgan Louisiana Pipeline in mid-2007 (see Daily GPI, June 25, 2007).

The second leg of Kinder Morgan’s Louisiana line was previously authorized by FERC and placed in operation on April 18. The second leg consists of a one-mile, 36-inch diameter pipe extending from the Sabine Pass terminal to an interconnect with the Natural Gas Pipeline Company of America pipeline north of the terminal (this corrects the timing on the second leg; NGI regrets the error in the original story).

The entire pipeline has the ability to deliver 3.2 Bcf/d, which has been subscribed by Total Gas & Power North America Inc. and Chevron U.S.A. Inc. under 20-year contracts.
