Gulf of Mexico shut-in gas production was 1.954 Bcf/d as of Thursday afternoon, according to the Minerals Management Service. The amount is equivalent to 19.54% of daily Gulf gas production, which currently stands at about 10 Bcf/d.

This week’s statistics are a modest improvement over those reported last week (Dec. 22), when MMS said that 1.962 Bcf/d was shut in, amounting to about 19.62% of daily Gulf gas production.

Cumulative shut-in gas production from Aug. 26 to Dec. 29 is 560.766 Bcf, equivalent to about 15.36% of yearly gas production from the Gulf of Mexico, which is about 3.65 Tcf. MMS will issue its next report on shut-ins due to Hurricanes Katrina and Rita Jan. 5. The agency said previously it would shift from reporting Gulf shut-ins daily to twice weekly (see Daily GPI, Dec. 14). The service said at the time that it expected “incremental improvement over the next several months.”

In its Dec. 28 report on shut-in gas, Golden, CO-based Bentek Energy said that Gulf Coast production loss was 1.39 Bcf/d and that its cumulative figure for production loss since Aug. 26 stood at 523.5 Bcf.

Previously, El Paso reported that as of Dec. 16 total flows on its Tennessee Gas Pipeline, Southern Natural Gas and ANR Pipeline systems remained down by 770 MMcf/d out of 4.97 Bcf/d flowing before Katrina struck Aug. 29 (see Daily GPI, Dec. 27).
