Natural gas for transportation continues to branch out, with developments in both compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) options.

Emission Solutions Inc. (ESI), a Texas-based CNG conversion specialist, is moving to Franklin, PA, after being purchased by CNG One Source, which provides conversions and fueling stations. ESI declared bankruptcy last year after top customer Navistar decided to offer natural gas trucks with Cummins Westport engines. ESI specializes in converting Navistar International engines (7.6-liter DT 466) to spark ignition dedicated gas operation.

CNG One said a top priority would be reaffirming that ESI’s engine has been certified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). “The purchase of ESI will allow [us] to further develop the industry for medium and heavy duty natural gas vehicles [NGV],” said CNG One President Karen Teslovich.

AGA Systems in Utah received further U.S. EPA certification for some of its bifuel kits. Last year, AGA was certified for CNG/gasoline bifuel kits for 2013 General Motors (GM) trucks, and now it has certification for “DuraDrive” kits for both GM and Isuzu adaptable chassis platforms with 6-liter gaseous prep engines. The company maintains that “bifuel trucks equipped with the DuraDrive systems easily can “transition between CNG and gasoline, offering drivers extended mileage range.”

In El Paso, TX, local transit operator Sun Metro awarded a five-year contract for up to 202 heavy-duty CNG buses to New Flyer Industries. The contract begins with a firm order for 13 60-foot buses and nine 40-foot models. Delivery is expected early next year. New Flyer said it has produced 4,700 CNG buses during the past 20 years.

Meanwhile, Texas-based Stabilis Energy LLC’s Green Energy Fuels expects to take delivery of 10 LNG-power Peterbilt 388 sleeper tractors this month to haul LNG and equipment for oilfield service operations. The parent company also plans to build five LNG production plants.
