FERC on Thursday said that it has resumed the receipt of mail from the U.S. Postal Service after the threat of possible anthrax contamination of mail in the Washington, DC, region proved to be false.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) earlier in the week stopped receiving mail from the U.S. Postal Service on March 15 after signs of possible anthrax contamination were reported at the Pentagon mail facility and several other Defense Department mail facilities in northern Virginia.

The postal service blackout was extended to all government agencies in the area. However, subsequent anthrax tests at the facilities came out negative.

The Commission faced a delay in mail delivery in late 2001 after a series of still-unsolved anthrax attacks via mail resulted in the deaths of several individuals in the Washington, DC, region and elsewhere.
