Anschutz Exploration Corp. (AEC) said its first two wells targeting the Turner formation, a tight sands oil play in Wyoming’s Powder River Basin (PRB), tested at record rates and are continuing at high rates of production.

Denver-based AEC said Tuesday its Theo Fed 3571-17-5-1FH well initially produced (IP) at a peak 24-hour rate of 3,193 boe/d, 87% oil. The Remi State 3671-16-21-9FH well initially flowed at a peak 24-hour rate of 3,123 boe/d (90% oil).

The Theo Fed well has an effective stimulated lateral length of 6,872 feet, according to AEC, while the Remi State well has an effective lateral length of 8,072 feet.

The Theo Fed well, which was turned to sales last December, had a 30-day peak IP rate of 2,187 boe/d, or 318 boe/d per 1,000 feet of stimulated lateral, making it the top performing horizontal well in the PRB in terms of 30-day IPs, according to AEC. The well had a 60-day peak IP rate of 1,862 boe/d, and a 90-day peak IP rate of 1,721 boe/d. The well produced 154,859 boe during its initial 90 days online.

The Remi State well, which was turned to sales in February, generated a peak 30-day IP rate of 2,141 boe/d, or 265 boe/d per 1,000 feet of stimulated lateral. The well produced 64,215 boe during its initial 30 days of production.

AEC said both wells are five miles north and 11 miles north of Chesapeake Energy Corp.’s Sundquist 9-34-71 USA A TR 13 well, which had a peak IP rate of 2,565 boe/d, 82% weighted to oil. The Sundquist well also targets the Turner formation.

Privately held AEC is focused on the PRB and Washakie Basin in Wyoming; the Piceance and Denver-Julesburg basins in Colorado; and the Uinta Basin in Utah. The exploration and production company controls more than 385,000 net acres and has two operated rigs deployed in Converse County, WY.

In February Chesapeake said the PRB, which it returned to in 2016, had four rigs running, with plans to add a fifth later this year. Chesapeake intends to bring on 33 wells this year in the Turner formation. “What you’re going to see in 2018 is basically a Turner-focused program in the Powder,” Chesapeake Executive Vice President Frank Patterson, exploration and production chief, said during a fourth quarter conference call.

EOG Resources Inc. last August also said it had completed eight wells targeting the Turner during 2Q2017, with an average treated lateral length of 8,700 feet/well and average 30-day IP rates per well of 1,745 boe/d.
