The Ohio Power Siting Board (OPSB) has authorized Boston-based Clean Energy Future LLC to construct a 955 MW natural gas-fired power plant in Lucas County.

The Oregon Energy Center is the latest to gain the approval of state regulators and one of dozens that are planned or under construction in Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. The facility would be the second in the city of Oregon, which is about five miles east of Toledo. Clean Energy commissioned the 870 MW Oregon Clean Energy Center over the summer.

That plant, first announced in 2013 and now owned by Ares Management LP affiliates and I Squared Capital, is one of the region’s first developed to utilize low-cost supplies from the Utica and Marcellus shales. Planned upgrades would increase the facility’s output to more than 900 MW.

The company announced the second facility earlier this year. It expects to have project financing secured by January with construction beginning in February. Operations are scheduled to begin in 2020.

Natural gas would be delivered to the plant via one or more nearby pipelines, according to the OPSB. The plant is to be interconnected to nearby 138 and 345 kilovolt transmission lines.

Clean Energy operates or is developing more than 4,000 MW of natural gas-fired power in Ohio.
