Daniel Yergin, vice chairman of IHS Inc. and founder of IHS CERAWeek, is receiving the inaugural Carnot Prize by the University of Pennsylvania‘s Kleinman Center for Energy Policy. The award recognizes “distinguished contributions to energy policy through scholarship and/or practice.” The prize, intended to honor those who have revolutionized energy policy understanding, memorializes French scientist Sadi Carnot, who in 1824 published “Reflections on the Motive Power of Fire,” which became the basis for the second law of thermodynamics. Yergin, the author of several books about energy policy and history, won a Pulitzer Prize in 1991 for The Prize: The Epic Quest for Oil, Money and Power. Yergin earned his undergraduate degree from Yale University and his doctorate from Cambridge University. He is a member of the National Petroleum Council and the Secretary of Energy’s Advisory Board, and he is a trustee of the Brookings Institution, a director of the Council on Foreign Relations and the New America Foundation, and he serves on the advisory board of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Energy Initiative and the Yale University Climate and Energy Institute. In 2014, Yergin received the James Schlesinger Medal for Energy Security from the Department of Energy.
