Con Edison of New York (Con Ed) set a new record for natural gas consumption last week after a blast of cold weather hit its service area, which includes most of New York City and Westchester County, NY.

The company said it provided 1.68 million Dth during a 24-hour period on Jan. 13 and 14, eclipsing the previous record of 1.6 million Dth was set Dec. 17-18, 2013. The gas delivered last week went to residential and commercial customers, and for power and steam generation.

Customers converting from fuel oil to gas helped the company achieve the new record. Con Ed said it converted 824 large buildings in New York City from No. 4 and No. 6 fuel oil to gas in 2014. The company said it converted 618 large buildings in the city from No. 2 fuel oil to gas last year as well.

Con Ed spokesman Allan Drury told NGI the company has converted about 3,700 large buildings in New York City from oil to gas since 2011, including 1,249 in 2014.

“There is sufficient pipeline capacity to New York City to meet the expected customer demand for many years into the future, even with the oil-to-gas conversions that are taking place,” Drury said. He added that Con Ed projects that peak demand will increase 2.8% per year for the next five years.

Con Ed, a subsidiary of Consolidated Edison Inc., provides natural gas service to three New York City boroughs — Manhattan, the Bronx and parts of Queens — and parts of Westchester. It also provides electricity service in New York City, except for a small area of Queens, and most of Westchester. It has more than 3.4 million customers.

Last week, Williams said two recently completed expansions helped Transcontinental Gas Pipe Line Co. LLC (Transco) deliver a record 12.6 million Dth through its interstate pipeline system on Jan. 7 (see Daily GPI, Jan. 15). Transco, which delivers all along the East Coast and is one of the main lines serving New York City, also set a record for three-day market area delivery from Jan. 7-9, averaging 11.9 million Dth.
